So, it's been a while...how've you been? Good I'm glad to hear it. I recently fell in love with Abiotic's newest release "Casuistry". Why? Because it's fucking bad ass! But I'll get to the point, they've really STEPPED IT UP as musicians and my goodness there's some great writing on this album.
Truth be told I never really got too into Abiotic, sure I listened to their debut EP "A Universal Plague" and the debut full length "Symbiosis" but they never grabbed me. Even the fan-favorite track "Vermosapien" did nothing for me. So when "Casuistry" dropped I was a little reluctant to give the guy a spin but I had a business trip planned and I figured "Fuck it, let's give it a shot!" and no lie of all the new music I brought with me on my trip "Casuistry" delivered.
The opening track "Believe the Unseen" let's you know from the get-go that Abiotic isn't messing around anymore. Less "core" influence and more shredding and progressive elements. The best part of saying "progressive" is that they went out actually wrote some killer soundscapes that compliment the solos and the atmosphere of the songs. They DID NOT go out and pick up 8-string guitars and axe-fx 2's and get on the polyrhythm band wagon hitting dead notes and opens. No D'jent is an A+ in my book, there's nothing progressive about being Meshuggah unless you are of course, Meshuggah.
Now with the writing being beefed up I give mad props to guitarists John and Matt on their killer ass solos. So much shred that it's not super wanky and all over the place but tastefully done. Besides guitars the rhythm section holds it down like no other. Drummer Brent, is precise and clean as fuck! I want to say he's a robot but I've seen him eat food so I know he's human. Lastly, the bassist Alex is master of his instrument. Filling in those rhythms with a fat punch of bass and some of his bass solos, (yes I said bass solos) are top notch. Filling in the space that's left for him on certain sections. Check out tracks like "Cast Into The Depths" "Violent Scriptures", and "Nightmares of Your Conception".
My favorite track on the album is "The Absence of Purity". It has a guest solo from Paul Waggnor of Between The Buried and Me but that's not why I like the track, his solo is cool but nothing too crazy compared to what the boys are doing on the entire album. The song has everything you would want from a metal track. Fast tempo, shredding solos, nasty bass licks, and an EPIC transition. I remember listening to the song for the first time on my trip and said "wow" and repeated that bitch ASAP. It's just TOO good.
Fuck What You Think: Casuistry is a great album headed in a great direction for Abiotic. Pick up the album and support good musicianship. Sometimes bands need that second chance to really demonstrate what they're all about!
Check out "Cast Into the Depths" it also features John Gallagher of Dying Fetus:
